How to Choose a Career Path with Too Many Interests

How to Choose a Career Path with Too Many Interests

If you are like many young people today, you may find yourself interested in many different things, but unsure which path to follow. Perhaps you're afraid of choosing something that won't lead you to a good career, or you're afraid of making the wrong choice altogether. This fear can be paralysing, making you feel stuck and uncertain about your future.

But here's the good news:
There is no such thing as the wrong choice - seriously.
One of the most important things to remember is that every experience you have adds value. Take for example a person we work with who studied sociology but has gone on to be successful in marketing and event management. The skills she gained from sociology were incredibly useful in her new field. The important thing is to make the most of every experience - even if it doesn't feel like ‘your thing’ now, these skills will probably come in handy later.

Know when to pivot
It is equally important to recognise when it is time to move on. Moving forward doesn't mean starting from scratch; it means building on what you've already learnt. Every step you take brings you closer to finding what really excites you.

University is not the only path to success
Many young people think that their time at university will determine their future career. But the reality is that many successful professionals did not find their career in the classroom. In fact, in our work with over 1,000 young people, nearly 60% found their career path not directly from their field of study, but through internships, side projects or extra-curricular activities. This means that your future is not limited to what you study at university; it is shaped by the experiences you seek.

Would you like to learn how to choose the right university and make the most of your experiences? Join us at the Catapult Your Career Summer Camp in Gudevitsa between 15-19 August. You will gain valuable knowledge while having fun!

Do you have too many interests? Here's how to choose
The first step in narrowing down your interests is to map them. At the summer camp we will guide you through this process, helping you build a clear picture of your passions and how they intersect with your skills.

We will then explore how these interests and skills are linked to specific activities, professions or roles. On the second day of the camp, we will dive deep into real-world applications and help you see potential career paths that align with what you love.

Finally, we will introduce you to a simple yet powerful tool to assess which skills, interests and related activities are most likely to succeed, taking into account current trends and future opportunities.

Are you afraid of making decisions? Here's what you need to know:
Making decisions can be daunting, especially when you feel the stakes are high. But remember:

Uncertainty is normal, being unsure is normal, but deep down you probably know what excites you the most.

The sooner you act the better, the longer you wait the more difficult it can be to make a decision. But don't worry - if you're not yet 30, you have plenty of time!

Just get started - sometimes the best way to figure things out is to dive in. Taking action builds confidence and after a few tries you will probably find what you are looking for.

Every experience is important - whether you get to the ‘right’ thing right away or not, every experience will help you grow. Overcoming challenges and building confidence is the real key to success. Look at the journey of any successful person and you will see that the ‘right’ path usually comes after a series of different experiences.
